Scholarships and Financial Assistance

  • A grant does not have to be repaid; a loan must be repaid with interest
  • A grant is always larger than a loan
  • A loan is only available to self-financing students
  • There is no practical difference

Grants are need-based assistance that does not require repayment, while non-means-tested loans must be repaid with interest, usually accruing from the date of disbursement.

  • Different schemes apply to publicly-funded and self-financing places, and amounts change annually
  • One single scheme covers every student regardless of programme type
  • Only students with the highest grades can receive assistance
  • Self-financing students cannot apply for any assistance

Separate schemes apply to publicly-funded and locally-accredited self-financing programmes, and eligibility, amounts and deadlines are revised each year.

  • Accreditation is usually a prerequisite for financial assistance and affects recognition
  • It is only needed for overseas study
  • Accreditation guarantees a scholarship
  • Unaccredited programmes are always cheaper

Accreditation and listing on the Qualifications Register affect both recognition of the award and eligibility for government assistance schemes.
